It is impossible to sleep, when music from my earphones can't even overpower the sound of the airplane's engine, when I constantly feel as if I'm in the middle of an earthquake. Having a bed-seat almost doesn't make things better at all. This is by far the tiniest aeroplane I've travelled on, and boy, it can shake.
I never liked plane rides. Mainly because I'm paranoid, and I'm very aware that the evacuation and safety demonstrations are practically useless if something really happens mid-journey. I hate take-offs and touch-downs. I don't have faith in things that move too fast. I fear the toilet that acts as if it's going to suck me along with all the junk when I flush. I don't like the way my hair entangle from the electrostatic force and friction. And I secretly think of my last words when the plane experiences turbulence.
It's 3am back home. I'm supposedly a few thousand feet above the Pacific Ocean. I think. About 2 more hours until the seatbelt sign goes on again.
The only thing likeable, to me, about plane rides, is the airport. For a people-watching lover like me, it's almost like a five-star buffet, with multinational cuisine. I like noticing how people from different lands function, how Chinese normally stare at iPads while waiting and how Caucasians tend to engross themselves in books. And the iPad is invented in the west, oh the irony.
(The Australian man sitting an aisle-width away from me is snoring profusely. I can hear him over my earphones.)
And one thing I like about night flights is the sky. Not an inch of the night sky is not empty of stars. The sky is literally fully occupied by glitter. It's so mesmerising that sleeping feels like a waste of time. Why doze away when you have the most beautiful view of the night sky you can ever get? And the sunrise. The contrast of the clouds that changes every minute. I've always been trying to take pictures of it but the pictures never seem to do the view even a little bit of justice. It's something you have to see with your own eyes.
Okay I shall try to get some sleep now. People should stop walking up and down the cabin.
